Don’t Assume Chinese Are Rude

A lot of Westerners have commented on social media that most Chinese are rude. They specifically mention being bumped while walking without a “pardon me” or “excuse me”. Sometimes you may feel that the person speaking to you is doing so in a rude and dismissive way. But understand their culture before you pass judgement. First of all, many do not speak English. This puts them at a defensive with foreigners. They don’t want to lose face by showing you that they don’t understand English. It is not aimed at you for being a foreigner. It is just an inherent trait among them. However, showing you are polite, and smiling will help them warm up to you. The burden is on you, not on them.
