Chinese people do not tip, and tips are not expected. Even taxi drivers, hotel staff, and servers do not expect tips, and tipping may just confuse them. Worse, it may offend them. It may seem weird, but again, it is a communist state, and tipping is seen as a luxury one should not have. But tours are the exception. Most tour guides and drivers rely on tips from tourists for their daily income. So this is when you should tip. Upscale hotels as well will accept tips, around 5-30 Yuan ( $1-$5) should do for a bellboy carrying your bags, and about 10% to 15% for food bills or room service. Make sure to smile as you tip soas to avoid embarrassment from those receiving it.
