Don’t Expect English To Always Be Understood

Source: http://www.bjreview.com

Most Chinese do not understand English, or other foreign languages. Those who can speak English, don’t speak it well enough, and it may be difficult to understand them. Mandarin is their national language, which is different from Cantonese (Hong Kong), or Fukien (Taiwan). However, upscale hotels do have staff that speak and understand English. If you don’t know any Mandarin, be prepared to do sign language, particularly pointing. You may have to point at the pictures on a menu to get your order understood, most menus don’t have a English translations like those in Hong Kong or Macau. Just don’t point at people, it is impolite anywhere you go. Google Translate is also quite useful. Make sure you install it in your devices before you visit China. Best of luck.
