Light and Dark Therapy

Light and dark therapy is similar to Social Rhythm Therapy since it also centers on a patient’s irregular biological clock. The disturbance in the normal sleep-wake patterns of Bipolar patients are known triggers for manic and depressive episodes, the main reason why circadian rhythms should be corrected.
Patients undergoing Light and Dark Therapy are shielded from artificial light and placed in an environment of controlled darkness in order to “reset” their internal clocks. By doing this, mood cycling is kept to a minimum, preventing Bipolar episodes.
