Medicines play a big role in the treatment of Bipolar disorder, particularly in regulating the effects of natural chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. A group of drugs called “mood stabilizers” control a patient’s manic or “high” episodes.

Drugs such as lithium (Lithobid), valproic acid (Depakene), carbamazepine (Tegretol, Equetro), divalproex sodium (Depakote), and lamotrigine (Lamictal), are some examples of the medications that fall under this group
