Chimpanzees are strong, social, and smart. While it’s legal to own a chimpanzee in several countries, it’s prohibited to keep one in many states in the US. If you get a permit, expect to spend $60,000 initially just to cover the cost to buy one.
Affectionate and remarkably intelligent, a chimpanzee seems like the ideal exotic pet, but note that its intelligence can lead to boredom and destructive behavior. It is active and strong and can become very demanding once it reaches adulthood. You’ll need to give your new pet a sturdy enclosure in the form of a large room or a big outdoor space with branches, swings, ropes, and suitable toys. Your chimp will also need nutritionally complete “monkey chow” to substitute its diet of plants and animals in the wild. Also, expect to spend money on regular visits to the vet because chimps are prone to diabetes, dental disease, and heart problems.
