A capybara, also called a carpincho, water hog, or giant hamster, is the largest living rodent. It can grow up to four feet long and weigh well over a hundred pounds, eating six to ten pounds of food each day. You can get a license to buy one in Texas or Pennsylvania for $1,100, but it’s not legal to own a capybara in some states. This semiaquatic mammal is sweet, tame, and friendly, and it loves to interact with humans, but it needs a place where it can swim as often as possible. It will need a big space to roam around because it’s not recommended you keep it indoors where it will chew on everything it sees. It’s also a picky vegetarian, and as an extremely social animal, it does better in groups. So, aside from home, food, and healthcare costs, prepare to spend more on at least another two giant hamsters to hang out with your outgoing pet.
