Clint Eastwood and His Ape

Groovy History

Most people know Clint Eastwood as a tough, gun-slinging cowboy, but apparently there was a time when he didn’t mind taking a break from being a bad guy and taking on a more comedic role. The crazy thing is that the role originally belonged to Burt Reynolds, who decided to drop out of the film. Eastwood even knew that it wasn’t expected of him, sharing, “It was not quite the thing people were expecting. No one was particularly excited about it. It had nothing to do with Dirty Harry. I saw it as some camp deal. There was something about the screenplay that was unusual. I mean, it was about this fringe society where there was bare-knuckle fighting… It turned out to be this PG kind of movie one that could reach down to an audience I hadn’t been appealing to with the tougher pictures.”
