Originally bred as a guardian dog, this breed reaches to an average of 30 inches, and weighs about 130 pounds. It is a fierce and fearless dog, and confident against any threat. They are strong-boned and muscular, and have been used for centuries to protect property and livestock from predators and intruders. There are basically two types – the Mountain type with a long coat, and the Steppe type, which has a short coat and a slightly smaller body. They need serious training, and are not recommended for first-time owners. Also, it would not be good to let children or the elderly walk the dog, it will overpower them with its brute strength.
