Another large Italian dog breed, closely related to the Neapolitan Mastiff. They predate the Neaplolitan Mastiff, and are less bulky, but very muscular. They average about 110 pounds and are around 72 cm. Its head is the most important feature, it is large and imposing. These dogs make good guard dogs, and live an average of 9 years. They are loyal, affectionate, and quite intelligent. They are loyal and very protective, and their name roughly translates from the latin “bodyguard dog.” They are prone to getting overweight, and they will eat any food you put in front of them. So try not to overfeed them, some have been known to balloon to close to 200 pounds.
