Unlike other large dog breeds, the Newfoundland was bred as a fisherman’s work dog, not a guard dog. They would assist fishermen with lines, nets, and jump into the water to save people or belongings that fell off the boat. Needless to say, they are excellent swimmers, even though they can weigh up to 200 pounds. Known as “Newfies”, they are best in water search and rescue. They are powerful, and highly intelligent. They are also very gentle and adorable. They may look bigger with their thick double coat, which helps them keep warm and safe in freezing waters. They require exercise and training, and are better in places where they could take a swim when they want to.
