This is considered impolite and an omen of bad luck. Buddhism has many rules Westerners may not understand. Research before you visit temples, or ask a local what rules you need to follow. Also, do not touch the images of Buddha, or kiss another person (even as a greeting) in front of an image as well. This is considered disrespectful to their deity. Some tourists who were not in the know got into trouble. There is no excuse for ignorance when it comes to their Buddha. Don’t be one of the ignorant tourists.
