While Fidel Castro has already passed away, his influences are still predominant in Cuban history and culture. Don’t start controversial banter in Cuba, especially involving the Castros, the Revolution, and Communism. While it is safe for tourists to visit Cuba and mingle with the locals (it was illegal for locals to mingle with tourists until 1997), government criticism is not tolerated. Freedom of speech is not part of the norm. Locals have their own political beliefs and may discuss among themselves in private. They however, will take offense to any foreigner who criticizes their government and their leaders. Remember that Cuba is still ruled by the Communist Party. Don’t do anything that they do not allow. Dissing the government, and the late Fidel Castro is surely on top of their list.
