Cuban culture may take some time getting used to. They apparently are very sensitive about several issues. Particularly towards Americans. The conflict between the US and Cuba throughout history has tainted how locals perceive Americans. There is a real bias, so don’t take this lightly. Some American sense of humor or sarcasm will most likely be misinterpreted. Not that Cubans look for a reason to find Americans offensive, it is just their ways are different. Remember they were not allowed to mix with foreign tourists until 1997 (except for the locals working in tourist resorts). So be as polite as you can, smiling always helps.
