Because of the stigma and history of US-Cuban relations, any card issued by an American Bank is not accepted here. While since 2015, American issued Mastercards are now being accepted in Cuba, it is not a widespread practice. American Express is surely not going to be accepted anywhere. If you are not American, your Visa card and Mastercard will be accepted. However, they will charge an 11% commission aside from the cost of transaction. Besides, Cuba is mostly a cash society. Best to bring euros, Canadian dollars, or pounds Sterling with you. US dollars are not accepted since 2004, and changing it to local currency will devaluate your greenbucks by 20%. Hopefully, if the relations between the US and Cuba improve, the ban on US currency and credit cards will just thaw away.
