In Cuba the local bus is called the gua gua and is the cheapest form of transport. This is what most locals use to get around, and most locals are quite poor. Tourists would be better off taking taxis or pedal cabs instead. The buses are dilapidated, not well maintained, over crowded, and have erratic schedules. Should you take a bus to travel to other cities, use the tourist bus line called the Viazul. Local intercity buses are called Omnibus or Astro, they are also over crowded. Besides they are meant for people with local IDs. And the drivers will be fined should authorities find out they accept foreigners for trips to other cities.
