Do Not Get Confused With Cuba’s Dual Currency System

Source: http://www.jamaicaobserver.com

Some travellers tend to get confused with the dual currency system of Cuba. The official currency the locals use is the Cuban Peso (CUP). But, the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) is the “new” tourist currency mostly used by foreigners. Take note that 1 CUC = 22 CUP. All places accept both, though non-Cubans should not have CUPs. Always count and examine your change. You may be paying in CUC but the change given to you may be in CUP. Makes sure the conversion rate is correct, otherwise you will be shortchanged. Foreign currency can be converted to CUC in a bank or a Cadeca, something like a currency kiosk. Banks will have better rates, just don’t use US dollars or you will lose a lot in the exchange rate.
