LGBTQ Travelers Should Avoid Public Displays Of Affection

LGBTQ travelers to Jamaica should be cautious, since sexual acts between men is considered to be illegal and highly frowned upon by most Jamaicans. As mentioned in the Offences Against the Person Act of 1864, Section 79 Outrages on Decency:
“Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or is a party to the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be guilty of a misdemeanour, and being convicted thereof shall be liable at the discretion of the court to be imprisoned for a term not exceeding two years, with or without hard labour.
It is peculiar that it is not illegal for women to engage in homosexual acts. LGBTQ travelers are of course welcome in Jamaica and are allowed to go on vacation here. However, LGBTQ travelers are advised to refrain from public displays of affection and expressing sexual orientation to strangers.”
