Never Buy Weed (Unless You’re Willing to Pay the Fine)

Jamaica has a reputation for widespread marijuana use. Marijuana, locally known as ganja, also more commonly known as weed has been connected to Jamaican culture, primarily because of Rastafarianism and Reggae music. And in 2015, a law made the following legal: medical marijuana, and the use of marijuana by Rastafarians in religious ceremonies. It is therefore likely that during your vacation you will encounter someone who will try to sell you some. Despite this reputation, marijuana in Jamaica is illegal (unless it is part of the exemptions mentioned above). However, since 2015, possession of small amounts (up to two ounces or 56.6 grams) is just a petty offense. So, if you do want to indulge, remember that if you get caught by the police and you have less than two ounces on you, you’ll get hit with a ticket, and luckily not a pair of handcuffs. If a little bit of legal hassle is acceptable for you, then you can go for it. If not, then when you see a roadside “brownie” stand, or encounter the occasional hawker on the beach, a simple “no, thank you” should keep you out of trouble.
