Most resorts, especially the reputable ones, are generally safe. And the staff of these establishments are friendly and accommodating. However, as mentioned by the U.S. State Department, the occurrence of sexual assault in Jamaica is high. And these assaults have even been recorded to occasionally happen even in gated and secured all-inclusive resorts. As a precaution, tourists are advised not to be left alone even with the resort staff. This reminder is especially true for female travelers. In fact, in December 2018, it was mentioned by both the New York Post and CBS News that according to a report by the Detroit Free Press that “sexual assaults of tourists are a long-standing and unchecked problem in Jamaica, where an estimated one American is raped a month, according to State Department statistics.” Therefore, the best precautionary rule to follow would be to remain close to your group when traveling with your friends or family. If you are however traveling alone, you should frequent areas where you can be around other tourists or visitors when in a resort.
