Don’t get us wrong, Jamaica is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy your vacation in. However, if you don’t exercise the proper precaution, your dream vacation can become a nightmare pretty fast. Keep in mind that Jamaica currently has a U.S. Department of State Level 2 travel advisory, which reminds travelers to exercise increased caution. Jamaica of course is not the only country that has this kind of advisory. Even some countries in Europe have a level 2 travel advisory. Countries in Europe such as France, Denmark, Belgium, and even the United Kingdom have a level 2 travel advisory.
As of 2019, according to the UN, Jamaica has the 2nd highest homicide rates per capita. Majority of these violent crimes however happened between Jamaicans. Although in 2017, a total of 6 U.S. Citizens were murdered in Jamaica, 20 were robbed, 12 were sexually assaulted, and 6 were victims of aggravated assault.
That doesn’t mean that you should just scrap your Jamaican holiday. You can still push through with your holiday and enjoy it immensely as well. Just keep in mind to be extra cautious when you are in Kingston, Montego Bay, and in Spanish Town. You should also stick to heavily populated areas and avoid some areas at night. With this in mind, but those within major tourist destinations will likely feel perfectly safe.
