English is the official language of Jamaica. However, a large majority of the Jamaica people also speak a form of English Creole. English Creole is known to linguists as Jamaican Creole or Patois. Jamaican Creole is a mixture of English and a variety of West African languages. Keep in mind though that the English spoken in Jamaica has been influenced by the British. British spelling and grammar are the standard in the country. There are differences between American English and British English, however, these are relatively minor. And being able to clearly speak with the locals using English is a good thing for most tourists. It is of course way better than using hand gestures and trying to communicate using google translate.
