Avoid Eye Contact With Merchants

It is common for tourists to go to a gift shop, a local store or shops that are just interesting. It is completely fine and acceptable. You can also freely look at and examine the goods that are on sale. But keep in mind that when you are browsing at the shops in Jamaica, it is a good idea to avoid direct eye contact and chit chat with merchants. This is because most local merchants will understand eye contact as a signal that you are interested in buying an item from their shop. So, if you are just looking around and not yet prepared to purchase any merchandise, just focus on the merchandise and not on the shop owner or attendant. If you are however ready to purchase something, feel free to give the merchant the look. Don’t stare for too long though, that would just be rude.
