Never Eat Non-Local Seafood

Fresh and delicious seafood is plentiful in Jamaica. However, that doesn’t mean that all of the seafood that you will see being served in the restaurants are all fresh and locally sourced. Aiming to satisfy foreign travelers, some hotels and restaurants will prepare non-local seafood such as salmon and tiger prawns.
A discerning tourist such as yourself, would be prudent and be able to exercise wise judgement if you are knowledgeable which seafood is locally sourced and which ones are sourced somewhere else. Why do you need to avoid imported seafood you ask? Well, non-local seafood is not just more expensive, but is of lower quality since these have been frozen. Some of the non-local seafood to look out for would include salmon, tiger prawns, and the like. Try to stick to excellent local fish like mahi-mahi, snapper, grouper, mackerel, lionfish, and shrimp (which is abundant). Also, feel free to choose that mouthwatering lobster, but only when it is in season (from July through March).
One great way to enjoy fresh local seafood would be to find a beachside jerk shack that buys seafood from local fishermen and cooks whatever the catch of the day is.
