Never Expect Help From The Police

The police in general are dedicated and have good intentions. However, the police in Jamaica have a reputation of being undependable when it comes to dealing with petty crimes. This is primarily due to the lack of resources of the police force and the fact that the police are underpaid, understaffed and overworked. Because of the lack of resources, the Jamaican police force prioritizes their efforts in solving and preventing serious crimes and not on petty theft. So, if by some stroke of bad luck, you lose some of your belongings, get robbed or get pick-pocketed; you will most likely have to deal with by yourself. You can go to the police and make a report, but don’t expect much to be done about it. Your stolen stuff is most likely gone. Which is why it is important to exercise caution and avoid the riskier parts of the country.
