Some people still get confused with the two modes of transport. There are surprised tourists who ask for directions to hop on the streetcar (thinking it is the famous cable car), only to get directed to the Muni. The popular San Francisco attraction known as cable cars are mechanically powered. Streetcars or trolleys (trams in Europe) are pushed by on-board electric motors and require a trolley pole to produce power from an overhead wire. Most streetcars have been dismantled, or converted to what is now called the light rail (like the Muni). The San Francisco cable car system is the last manually operated cable car system. It is the popular tourist attraction, so try not to get confused.
