This is a dog originally bred for fishing in Portugal. It averages about 40-50 pounds, but can exceed this easily. They are very loyal and obedient dogs. And they do love the water. They have “webbed” paws that aid them in swimming, and they are excellent swimmers. Their muscular build aids them as well, whether swimming or running. They have great stamina and love to exercise. The American Kennel Club classifies this breed as a “working dog.” They may be working dogs, but they love to play. They are hypoallergenic and require little grooming and maintenance. Very protective, but will not attack unless provoked.
