Salma Hayek on the Role of Selena

Groovy History

By the time 1998 rolled around, everyone knew who Salma Hayek was. She had starred in a number of films, including Lethal Weapon 4. Apparently, Hollywood producers had their eyes on Hayek, wanting her to play the role of Selena in the movie, but apparently it was a role she didn’t want because she felt it was distasteful on their part considering the young singer had just been killed. She told Andy Cohen, “[The producers] offered it to me like a week after she [Selena Quintanilla-Perez] died. It was a little bit distasteful. They were already planning on making this movie.” And that’s how Jennifer Lopez got the part.
