The generation today might remember Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Winona Ryder as the mom in Netflix’s hit TV series Stranger Things, but back in the 90s, they were THE Hollywood IT couple. Having met on the set of Edward Scissorhands, the two hit it off despite their 8-year age gap. Eventually, Depp asked Ryder to marry him, but her father refused to give his blessing. They then asked John Waters, who happened to be the director of another one of Depp’s movies Crybaby, to marry them, which didn’t end up pushing through. Waters told reporters, “Before we wrapped Depp’s lawyers did the paperwork to get me ordained as a minister in the Universal Life Church because [Depp and Ryder] wanted me to perform the marriage ceremony, but I gently talked them out of it because Winona was so young.” Good thing too because the couple eventually decided to break up sometime in 1993.
