Even though Jessica Alba was praised for her performance when she first rose to fame for her role in Dark Angel, she was also immediately judged mainly on her looks. While The Orlando Sentinel commended Alba’s unusual style which elevated the show’s standard elements, it was also pointed out how her beauty made up for her sometimes awkward line readings. The Chicago Tribune wrote that the post-apocalyptic heroine had been “modified for physical attractiveness” for young male viewers. And The Los Angeles Times highlighted Alba’s pouty faces, sexy walks, and how great she looked on her bike.

Regrettably, her good looks overshadowed her skills, and this affected the depth of roles she was offered. Alba often voiced out her concerns about being typecast as a sex kitten. She wanted to be taken seriously as an actress, so she started rejecting roles that put her in spandex, a bikini, or a leather bodysuit. But then, her options became even more limited when she refused to be cast as a hot chick.
