The one-man film crew Robert Rodriguez is the mastermind behind many of the most creative, sophisticated, and visually inventive action films of the late 1990s and the early 2000s. Collaborating with Rodriguez is a tried and tested formula for commercial success—check out Antonio Banderas in the Mexico Trilogy (also called Mariachi Trilogy), George Clooney in From Dusk Till Dawn, and Jessica Alba herself in Sin City. In fact, Alba has frequently collaborated with Rodriguez, also starring in Machete, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.
Hoping to make a comeback, Alba returned to her comfort zone and starred in another one of Rodriguez’s messy, violent, yet enjoyable films, the 2013 sequel Machete Kills—for all of one minute. Not only was the movie far inferior compared to its predecessor, Alba signing on to appear for only one minute and have her name included in the poster, trailer, and credits hinted at her desperation to get back in the game, and this did not sit well with Hollywood.
