The 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants is dubbed “The Greatest Game Ever Played” as it was the first sudden death, overtime game in NFL championship history. After 8 minutes and 15 seconds of overtime and the score still tied 17-17, Colts fullback Alan Ameche, nicknamed “The Horse” for the way he worked in practice, took a pass from quarterback Johnny Unitas for a 1-yard touchdown run to win the game 23-17. It was also his second touchdown for the game, the first a 2-yard run in the second quarter.
