At Super Bowl XXIII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals, the Bengals were up 16-13 with 39 seconds left in the game. 49ers coach Bill Walsh then called for a slant play, called “20 Halfback Curl X-Up,” with running back Roger Craig as the primary target. However, Craig and fullback Tom Rathman both lined up in the wrong spot, and wide receiver Jerry Rice, who ran as a decoy, was also covered. Despite this, 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, nicknamed “Joe Cool” for not getting fazed under pressure, found receiver John Taylor, who beat defensive back Ray Horton to get open and caught the ball for a touchdown, giving the 49ers the lead for good at 20-16.
