The Helmet Catch enabled the New York Giants to score an upset against the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XLII, preventing the Patriots from completing a perfect 19-0 record. Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who was pressured by multiple Patriots defenders and almost got sacked, escaped and made a pass to wide receiver David Tyree at the Patriots 24. Tyree leaped and caught the ball but a swipe by Patriots safety Rodney Harrison caused his left hand to be knocked off the ball. Tyree then made a remarkable recovery by pressing the ball against his helmet and allowed the Giants to gain 32 yards from the play. The Giants would go on to score the touchdown that won them the Super Bowl.
