Tapas, as they are called in Spain, are basically small portions of any type of Spanish cuisine that those in America would refer to as appetizers or snacks. It is very common for most bars or establishments to serve drinks and tapas, where many locals would order a caña, which is how they refer to a glass of beer. If you happen to enter a bar that is charging for tapas, then leave and look for one that won’t charge you. Never pay for your basic tapas as most establishments will offer them for free for as long as you are drinking. Since Barcelona has become such a touristy place, many bars have started charging knowing that they can make more money, but it’s really not customary for them to do so.
