Do Not Hitchhike

Hitchhiking is not a thing in Indonesia. It’s not impossible to get a ride from strangers, but don’t count on it when planning a trip. Also, be cautious about accepting an offer from a stranger. If you can’t judge whether someone is offering a ride to help or because they expect something in return, don’t get into it. Indonesia is not the safest place to try to hitchhike around. Actually, most of the time it would be more dangerous to the driver if he would take a hitchhiker. Criminals have been known to target taxis and other ride sharing drivers, and they would steal from them. In some cases, drivers have even ended up with the driver getting killed.
Another factor why hitchhiking is not popular in Indonesia is because the fare for public transportation is cheap. It won’t cost you much if you want to travel from city to city via bus, there wouldn’t be a need to hitchhike.
