There are exemptions for tourist places with a lot of international visitors like Bali. But in most other public places in Indonesia, the law and norm are highly influenced by the principles of Islam, drinking alcohol is something you should keep to yourself. It is not illegal, but you have to be discreet and you need to choose an appropriate time and place. For example, you can drink yourself stupid with any kind of alcohol when at a bar. This is perfectly acceptable. Just don’t continue that binge drinking while you are strolling down the street.
For tourists who will be travelling with younger companions. Keep in mind that drinking alcoholic drinks in Indonesia is only allowed if you are already of legal age to drink. The legal age for drinking is 21 years old. Anyone caught drinking who is below the legal age may face serious punishment or fines from the authorities.
