Having maids is not a luxury as labor is cheap in the Philippines. It is not like in the US or Europe where the hired help earn decent wages. Most families from the lower-middle class up have at least one maid to serve, cook, or wash. Wages can range from as low as $30 a month, but with free meals and beddings.Some hire extra help during big parties which is still cheaper than having it catered. But do not disrespect them just because they are maids, they are still proud and sensitive like most Filipinos. Some households, the more affluent ones, have at least three maids, and most likely a driver or two. But that is more of the exception than the rule.
