Don’t Get Confused With The Street Names

If you’re new to Austin, keep your phone with you in case you get lost, and just show someone who knows the area the name of the street you’re looking for instead of mispronouncing it and getting even more lost in the process. But here’s a guide on some of the names if you wish to test your articulation: Nueces Street is correctly pronounced as “New-AY-sez,” Pedernales Street is “PUR-der-nal-ehz” (yes, with the extra R), and Manor Road is said “MAY-ner” and not how you’d say a mansion.
Navigation is made even more confusing with major highways and roads having at least two names. The north-south highway Mopac goes by MoPac Expressway or Loop 1 (despite the lack of a loop), the Capital of Texas Highway is also called Loop 360 (again, without a loop), Ben White Boulevard is Highway 71, and Research Boulevard also goes by U.S. Route 183, Ed Bluestein Boulevard or Anderson Lane. The roads are no easier with Ranch Road 2222 getting christened as Allandale, Koenig, or Northland.
