Don’t Disregard The Cathedral Of Junk

The Cathedral of Junk is a whimsical and multilevel structure that’s constructed entirely from other people’s castoffs. This tower of discarded items is seemingly hidden in a suburban backyard of one Vince Hannemann who began construction in 1988. He used to collect junk for his project when he was in his 20s, but these days, people voluntarily supply him with their unwanted possessions. This steadily expanding museum is a favorite of locals and tourists who can always find something new added with every visit. What used to be just one tower is now several rooms of bicycle parts, cables, chairs, clocks, ladders, and an assortment of knick-knacks. There’s even a Zen garden of televisions.
Despite complaints made by some tenants, city engineers and officials found the cathedral structurally sound and safe. It’s often open, but you need to book in advance because the creator and curator might be busy deep in the belly of his museum. Aside from tours, the Cathedral of Junk can also be booked for events like parties and weddings.
