Driving on your own around the city is already a challenge, with the heavy traffic especially during festivals, the strict enforcement of traffic laws, the hunt for parking space, and the confusing street names. All these get compounded if you’re drinking. The city police run a “no refusal” program where they’re allowed to draw your blood to test your alcohol level if they suspect that you’ve been drinking before you got behind the wheel. The authorities should be strict because so many people die or are severely injured in accidents related to drunk driving. In 2015, alcohol was a factor in 60% of the city’s 102 fatal crashes. In 2017, an inebriated driver killed three family members who were only visiting on vacation. In September of this year, a man was convicted of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated because he went the wrong way and killed a motorcyclist in a head-on crash. Don’t add to the statistics and just take a cab or any of the many rideshare services available.
