Don’t Forget The Southern Manners

The residents of Austin are not just creative, they are generally nice and friendly, too. Perhaps it’s all the sunshine they soak up that brings out all that southern hospitality, but like most Texans, the city’s people are known for their friendliness and good manners.

It begins in the household where parents, or even grandparents, teach their children to keep their elbows off the table, put their napkin on their lap, and not to interrupt the person talking unless the house is on fire. They address adults using “Mr.” or “Mrs.” appended to the last name, or “Mr.” or “Ms.” before the first name.

When you’re visiting the city, apply common courtesies, too. Say “please” and “thank you,” and “excuse me” if you involuntarily burp or pass gas in public. Hold the door for people who need a little help and bring a gift when you’re invited to someone’s home. The locals will appreciate these gestures of respect and kindness.
