Don’t Worry About Keeping Austin Weird

The slogan, “Keep Austin Weird,” was started many years ago to promote small and local businesses in the city. It was inspired by Red Wassenich, a librarian and the author of “Keep Austin Weird: A Guide to the Odd Side of Town” and its sequel, “Keep Austin Weird: A Guide to the (Still) Odd Side of Town,” books that endorsed the city’s unique sites where the locals can be themselves and be weird if they wished to.
You can get a can of spray paint and leave your mark on the street wall, the HOPE Outdoor Gallery, or you can cover your entire body with paint. You can dig up odd treasures on South Congress and find antique relics in the emporium named Uncommon Objects. You can stare at the bats that come out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Tourists are encouraged to embrace the weirdness—or not. With countless jobs and new residents moving to the city, the “weird” vibe is not as ubiquitous as it was almost two decades ago. Austin is still weird, definitely more eccentric than Dallas or Houston, but “Keep Austin Weird” is not much of a culture now as it is a marketing slogan.
