Aside from its eclectic music scene, Austin also plays hosts to many film and theater festivals, and has drawn highly regarded directors, talented actors and actresses, and amazing movie personalities to these events. The city, with its towns, lakes, landscapes, and establishments, has played a backdrop in dozens of classic and contemporary movies.
The Sawyer household in the 1974 slasher film, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, was located on Quick Hill Road. Scenes from Top Notch Burgers and the Moontower in the 1993 coming-of-age cult-classic, Dazed and Confused, were also filmed in Austin. The fictional town of Endora, Iowa in the 90s drama that starred Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, was actually shot in Manor and Pflugerville, both suburbs of Austin.
On top of movies and film festivals, there is also a variety of performing arts, such as musicals, plays, and ballets, that theater enthusiasts will enjoy.
