Having A Smoke After Having A Baby

Elite Readers

This is where it all started. Right from the womb. Here’s a 1978 photo of a new mom, celebrating the birth of her baby with a smoke and a plate of roasted chicken in a hospital in Canada. Talk about cravings after labor. The health providers in this hospital probably didn’t get the memo that doctors had stopped promoting cigarette smoking after previously pitching its health benefits.
A long time ago, cigarette companies got people to believe that smoking lowers the risk of obesity. The same companies also tried to influence pregnant mothers to smoke because it would make their babies skinnier and easier to deliver without complications—this is total garbage, and shame on everyone who supported this. While smoking during pregnancy did contribute to low birth weight, it also increased the risk of developing health problems and birth defects. Smoking after pregnancy is definitely not recommended if the mother’s breastfeeding. Also, exposure to secondhand smoke increases the baby’s risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
