1950s Automotive Safety Standards

Chambre 237

Here’s another splendid example of car seat safety, circa 1958. The main features of this particular car seat are an uncomfortable-looking backrest that somewhat resembles an office in tray and a belt strapping the baby to said backrest. Even the baby doesn’t think that belt is any good as he clutches on to the side of his car seat. But this car seat has one more amazing feature—Mom’s arm (again!). Notice how the car seat is not attached to anything? Should anything bad happen, this sort of contraption relies on Mom to put her arm out and prevent the baby from pitching forward, car seat and all, and falling off the passenger seat.
Also, cars didn’t have seatbelts back then, and it wasn’t till 1968 before all vehicles were required to be fitted with seatbelts. Even then, seatbelt use was voluntary, and it was only in December 1984 that a law was passed requiring all vehicle occupants to strap on seatbelts.
