Enjoying A Smoke With Nana And Aunt Carol

SRGCDN

To be fair, there was a time people believed smoking was good for your health. In the 1930s and 40s, even doctors promoted cigarette smoking. Tobacco companies had doctors pitching smoking as healthy—even to teenagers and pregnant mothers. As horrifying as this sounds now, everybody back then believed the perceived benefits of smoking and thought the only problems were coughing and throat irritation. Hence, we had physicians endorsing cigarette brands that caused less throat irritation. It was only during the mid-1950s that tobacco companies had to acknowledge evidence that their products caused lung cancer. And by the 1960s, doctors informed the public that smoking caused lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, and chronic bronchitis. Hopefully, Nana and Aunt Carol got the memo and stopped letting children have a puff or two.
