Even though the ingenious Albert Einstein once said, “I believe that pipe-smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs,” it’s highly unlikely that it was smoking that inspired him to develop the theory of relativity or that he started pipe-smoking when he was two years old.
Aside from Holmes and Einstein, other known figures described as pipe smokers are the muscular cartoon sailor Popeye, the wizard Gandalf, and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Besides being fictional characters, you won’t ever see any of these people smoking a pipe in their youth. You definitely won’t see a picture of them holding a pipe when they were mere toddlers. Also, it’s hard to imagine a baby Gandalf. But there’s a baby Yoda, so who knows.
