Chase the Trend

Here’s a 1970 picture of a delightful four-year-old girl, enjoying the sights in a zoo in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She’s so cute and tiny, she could easily slip between the bars and get mauled by that bear. Seriously, what were her parents thinking, letting their young daughter step on to the ledge, with nothing but a steel fence with wide gaps preventing her from becoming bear food very quickly? Yes, our parents have told us time and again not to be overprotective, to let our kids fall so they would learn to get up on their own, but if this girl fell into the bear pit, it’s highly unlikely she’ll get up—or get out—on her own or even with help.
Here’s an idea: If that girl falls, the parents should jump in after her and distract the bear while their little girl gets rescued by zoo personnel. The heroic act might make up for their bad parenting, and they can start practicing health and safety measures the next time they go out on a family outing—if they survive the ordeal.
