Cider For Lunch

Twitter

Here’s a photograph from a Life magazine article in 1954 of primary school children in France drinking cider for lunch. We’re not talking about the unfiltered, unsweetened, non-alcoholic beverage made from apples. These children from rural schools brought liters of hard cider that they sipped or gulped with gusto together with their meal. The government tried to make primary school children drink milk instead of cider, but they were met with opposition. One teacher even voiced out that milk was considered a food and not a drink. Sure, milk can be regarded as a complete food because it’s rich in protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals, but that’s beside the point. It’s never okay to let children drink alcohol anywhere, not even in a wine-loving land. Sadly, it wasn’t just the parents at home placing the kids in danger but the ones they considered second parents in school, too.
